MONTROSE HOUSE

Montrose House is a heritage estate in Sutton Forest and one of the more architecturally specific venues we play in the Southern Highlands. The room dictates the setup more here than at most barn-style venues — the historic ceiling, the period detail, and the formal proportions of the main reception space mean that anything we bring in has to look intentional or it ruins the photographs. Our rustic white booth and column speakers work well at Montrose; a full club-rig would be a visual mistake. The acoustic at Montrose is the opposite of a barn — denser, more reflective, with a tendency to brighten high frequencies if you push the EQ wrong. We mix conservatively, run the mids slightly forward, and pull the high-end back about a half-decibel from where we'd run them at, say, Greyleigh. None of this is visible to a guest. All of it is the difference between a room that feels alive and a room that feels tinny. Lighting at Montrose has to honour the architecture. Big colour-changes look wrong against the period detail; we keep uplighting in a single warm tone for the formalities, shift to a slightly cooler accent during the speeches, and only push the saturation up after the first dance. The room rewards restraint and then suddenly, late in the night, looks magnificent when you finally do let the energy go. Montrose is roughly 90 minutes from Sydney and roughly 90 minutes from our Wollongong base. We stay overnight, which means the late-night packdown isn't being rushed and the run-sheet doesn't have a hidden time pressure.
